Old Latin. Older idea.

Audentes fortuna iuvat. The phrase is most famously from Virgil's Aeneid, spoken by Turnus right before he charges into a fight he's about to lose. Virgil knew his irony. But the proverb is older — Terence used it in 151 BC, and Pliny quoted it sailing toward Vesuvius. Fortune does favor the brave. It just doesn't always pay out the way you expected.
