If you would have fought like a man.
When the pirate hunters boarded Calico Jack's sloop off Jamaica in October 1720, most of the crew was drunk below decks and surrendered without a fight. Two people stayed topside swinging: Anne Bonny and Mary Read. According to Captain Johnson's 1724 history, Bonny's last words to Calico Jack before his execution were: "if he had fought like a Man, he need not have been hanged like a Dog." The line may be invention — but it's the line history kept. Take it however you need it.
