Three hundred years of legend gets you a lot of bad illustrations — most of them based on a 1724 woodcut that was already an artist's invention. We started over. Same fire in the beard, same theater in the smoke, but pulled into something that belongs on a person now and not just on a museum wall. A reminder that the figures who actually scared empires deserve better than a Halloween costume.
