Pirate Alley runs alongside St. Louis Cathedral in the French Quarter of New Orleans — a narrow passage between the cathedral and the Cabildo where, according to local legend, Jean Lafitte and his crew sold their stolen goods in plain sight of the Spanish colonial government. Whether the story is perfectly true or just perfectly New Orleans, the alley is real, the name stuck, and the spirit of doing business in the shadow of the law is as old as commerce itself.
